Lately, it’s been just the right speed to do some simple sewing with Liberty Fabrics. I love a project that can challenge me, but a good, simple project has its place too.
Liberty fabrics are such a treat, and over time I’ve accumulated some really good ones. I looked at my pile recently and decided that it was time to put them to use. I didn’t put too much thought into things other than what size to cut my squares. I wanted squares big enough that it didn’t feel too tedious, but small enough to feel super scrappy and plentiful with variety.
Each square is 4″ cut, and I’m happy with that. I’m working from fabrics that are all sizes, and I’m finding that 4″ works really well with many of the smallest pieces and scraps that I have lying around.
All fabrics are Liberty of London Tana Lawn, a dreamy, buttery fabric that is smooth, fine and crisp. I’ve been collecting Liberty for years and years. I love cutting through my stacks and remembering the shops I visited or the friends I traded with or the garments I’ve made.
The color and layout isn’t totally planned out. I knew I wanted a light and dark checkerboard to give it some consistency. In addition to that, I’ve been organizing my fabrics by color and value as I cut them out. This has helped me group colors loosely together as I lay out the squares. I’ll also cut squares for a little bit until I get bored. Then I’ll lay out squares, sew them together until I want a change from that. Then I go back to cutting out squares. It’s a relaxing process.
I’ve sewn together several rows so far and want to make it longer, which you can see. The goal is a throw-sized quilt to cuddle up on the couch with–a perfect weekend project!

Lovely and a lovely way to relax! I have been cutting Liberty scraps since the spring. One clarification-is your dark checkerboard mean a darker with a medium? Compared to dark with a light?

Best.

You’re so right…Liberty Tana is dreamy and juicy at the same time. I’ve been coveting my collection and maybe once you post the finished top, I’ll be brave enough to “cut in” to mine!

Wow, that’s going to be amazing! I’m a little envious of your stash of all those wonderful Liberty prints. You have such good taste. Can’t wait to see as you go along.
